Armour and Adornments Project

My initial drawings were based on birds and insects, done in a variety of black and white/ colour mediums. This later developed into material manipulation, batik dying based on the wings of butterflies, latex and clay moulding based on segments of insects like the earwig, and even learning how to knit, a skill I am glad I've acquired even though it took me quite a while to grasp it.

My final piece is based on an earwig. I also looked allot at the idea of armour, turning the insects segments into a helmet and shoulder pad. The colours (taken from the aforementioned insect) remind me of desert uniform from the army, which I suppose reinforces the idea it’s meant to protect. I added segments around the eye and latex over it, I had one antenna that looks a bit like a radio aerial and a shoulder strap so it can be worn with relative ease. Overall its one of my favourite pieces because of how unusual it is, it also showed a decent ability with textiles, that until this project I was unaware I had.
